Breakfast

Lecture on “The History and Significance of Cocoa in Ghana” by an official of the Cocobod or a stakeholder from the cocoa industry.

Lunch at a local restaurant (on own account).

Go on a city tour of Accra to: the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, National Museum and Artists’ Alliance Gallery. Drive past the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (with oversight for cocoa affairs), and the Black Star Square— Accra’s ceremonial grounds. In the distance see Christiansborg Castle, built by the Danes in the 1660s. It served as the seat of government since 1877 until recently.

A final stop will be the arts and crafts market where you may haggle with local vendors and shop to your heart’s content. Look out for the multi-award-winning Ghanaian chocolate brand “Golden Tree” to buy.

DAY 3

Breakfast and check-out.

Depart early morning to the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG) founded in 1938 at Tafo in the Eastern Region. En route, visit the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Cocoa Farm at Akuapem Mampong, the very first cocoa farm established in Ghana from seeds brought from Fernando Po in 1876. From this small beginning grew Ghana’s cocoa industry and Ghana’s largest export. Cocoa from Ghana is used to blend some of the world’s finest chocolates.

Lunch in Koforidua (on own account).

Depart for Tafo where you will be given a tour through a model cocoa plantation and see the varied uses of cocoa— processed into wine, soap, butter etc.

Depart Tafo for Kumasi in the Ashanti Region past several scenic villages and charming towns through evergreen forests.

Arrive in Kumasi by late afternoon and check into your hotel.

Rest of day is free for relaxation

DAY 4

Breakfast

Visit a typical cocoa farming community to interact with cocoa farmers and their families.  Learn at first hand how a cocoa farm is cultivated –maintenance, harvesting, and all the processes involved in removing the beans, drying etc. See the tools used in the farm.

Lunch (on own account).

Depart to Ntonso – Adinkra cloth and tie-and-dye textile processing center where you will have an opportunity to create your own designs.

Return to your hotel late afternoon.

Rest of evening free.

DAY 5

Breakfast

Go on a city tour of Kumasi: visit the Manhyia Palace and Palace Museum, National Cultural Centre, Prempeh II Jubilee Museum, and the Kumasi Central Market – the largest open-air market in West Africa.

Lunch (on own account)

Visit a local cocoa soap making factory. Made from cocoa pod potash combined with palm kernel oil and water, this “black soap”, is very effective for treating skin diseases.

DAY 6

Breakfast and hotel check-out

Depart for Elmina in the Central Region. Stop en route to visit a cocoa produce buying company one of the licensed cocoa buying firms. Observe how the company purchases the cocoa beans from the farmers.

Lunch (on own account)

Take a comprehensive guided tour of the Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482. This architecture with distinctive features is the first European structure built in sub-Saharan Africa.

DAY 7

Breakfast

Visit the Kakum National Park. Go on a morning walk of the Kuntan Trail with its countless medicinal trees. For the young at heart experience the Canopy Walkway suspended 100 feet above the forest floor for a panoramic view of the flora and fauna of the remaining vestiges of the rainforest.

Lunch at Hans Cottage Botel. View the resident crocodiles as you enjoy your meals. (on own account)

After lunch relax for the day at your hotel by the poolside.

Rest of day is free to relax at the beach

DAY 8

Breakfast and check-out.

Morning at leisure.

Depart Elmina for Accra, driving along the coast through several fishing villages and coconut-lined beaches. Arrive in Accra by early afternoon

Lunch at local restaurant

Check into hotel.

Rest of day free for personal pursuits or relaxation at the hotel’s poolside

Visit Cocoa Processing Factory at Tema. At the cocoa shed learn how raw cocoa beans are packaged for export. Get firsthand experience of methods used in processing cocoa beans into chocolate.

Farewell dinner in a Ghanaian home.

Morning at leisure for last minute shopping and packing.
